<History is ours and people make it»:
The last speech of Salvador Allende, was on
September 11, 1973, it is also the date of his death. In the Palacio de la Moneda de Chile, a place that was bombed by air and land. They must have taken him dead, he never gave up. With this, Democracy was lost and we suffered one of the most violent distractions known.Speech
My friends: Surely this is the last chance I can address you.
The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación. My words have no bitterness, but disappointment, and they will be the moral punishment for those who have betrayed the oath they made ... soldiers of Chile, head commanders, Admiral Merino who has appointed himself, plus Mr. Mendoza, general trainer, that only yesterday he showed his loyalty and loyalty to the government, he has also been appointed Director General of Police. Given these facts, I can only tell the workers: I am not going to quit! Placed in a historical transit, I will pay with my life the loyalty of the people.
And I tell you that I am sure that the seed that we deliver to the conscience worthy of thousands and thousands of Chileans, cannot be finally reaped. They have the strength, they can overwhelm us, but social processes do not stop with crime ... or force. The history is ours and the people make it.
Workers of my country: I want to thank you for the loyalty you always had, the confidence you placed in a man who was only an interpreter of great longings for justice, who insisted on his word that he would respect the Constitution and the law and he did so. In this final moment, the last time I can address you, I want you to take advantage of the lesson. The foreign capital, imperialism, together with the reaction, created the climate for the Armed Forces to break their tradition, which Schneider taught them and to reaffirm Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector that will be at home today, waiting with alien hand to regain power to continue defending their farms and their privileges.
I address, above all, the modest woman of our land, the peasant who believed in us; to the worker who worked the most, to the mother who knew about our concern for the children. I turn to the professionals of the country, to the patriotic professionals, to whom they had been working for days against the sedition sponsored by the professional Colleges, class colleges to also defend the advantages that a capitalist society gives to a few. I turn to the youth, to those who sang, they gave their joy and their fighting spirit. I am addressing the man from Chile, the worker, the peasant, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted ... because in our country fascism was already present for many hours in the terrorist attacks, flying the bridges, cutting the railway line, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, faced with the silence of those who had the obligation to proceed: they were engaged. History will judge them.
Surely Radio Magallanes will be quiet and the quiet metal of my voice will not reach you. It does not matter, they'll keep hearing. I will always be next to you guys. At least, my memory will be that of a worthy man who was loyal to the workers' loyalty. The people must defend themselves, but not sacrifice. The people should not be destroyed or riddled, but neither can they humble themselves.
Workers of my country: I have faith in Chile and its destiny. Other men will overcome this gray and bitter moment, where treason seeks to prevail. Keep on knowing that, much sooner than later, the great malls will open again where the free man passes to build a better society.
Long live Chile! Long live the town! Long live the workers!
These are my last words and I am sure that my sacrifice will not be in vain. I am sure that, at least, there will be a moral lesson that will punish felony, cowardice and betrayal.
