The sirens.
Homer
Sirens enchant all men who approach them. Whoever approaches his ship without knowing it and hears the voice of the sirens, will never be surrounded by his wife and tender children, full of joy because he has returned home; rather, they enchant him with their sonorous song, sitting in a meadow where they are surrounded by a great pile of decaying human bones, covered with dry skin. Odysseus: make the ship pass by and, melting pleasant wax like honey, smear the ears of your companions so that none of them can hear them. On the other hand, if you want to hear them, have them tie you hands and feet, stand close to the mast -that hold on to the mooring-, so that you listen with pleasure, the voice of the two mermaids; and if you beg your companions or order them to untie you, let them hold you still with more ropes.
